Depression is a very common mental disorder that affects one fifth of the world’s population. Although the disorder caused by the state of despair and depression, has been known since antiquity, there are still no truly effective treatments.
Currently, drugs are used that cause a bunch of different side effects in 60% of cases. These include cardiac toxicity, hypotension, sexual dysfunction, weight gain, and sleep disorders.
All this causes great concern of the medical community, which does not leave attempts to influence the situation. Over the past decade, there has been a growing interest in the therapeutic effects on mental disorders of natural products. Among the most effective means is Amaranth, about the useful properties of which we wrote in the article “The Use of Amaranth: Scientific Research.”
Do I need to treat depression
Depression usually leads to serious complications that pose a real threat to health and even life itself. In ancient times, it was generally considered the machinations of the devil. It is clear why. In appearance, a healthy person suddenly begins to think about death, does not want to live, nothing pleases him …
The main manifestations of this disorder include:
- sleep disorders;
- pronounced rapid fatigability;
- constant weakness;
- constant feeling of anxiety or fear;
- bouts of tachycardia;
- poor appetite;
- loss of interest in life down to the desire to commit suicide.
The statistical studies show an increase in the rate of development of complications. If earlier depressions were more susceptible to middle-aged people who survived strong emotional blows, alcoholics and unhappy ones in marriage, then today this ailment hits everyone. According to the old and young, sick and absolutely healthy.
Medicine recognizes that in every case of the detection of pathology, rapid intervention is necessary with the use of effective treatment methods. This is the only way to prevent the launch of powerful negative processes in the body that will inevitably lead to a decrease in the patient’s quality of life. Depression causes many problems not only with health, but also in the relations of patients with others, up to absolute isolation.
Root of depression
The postulate “all diseases from the head” is quite valid in this case. The brain controls all the processes in our body. It is his cells that perceive information about the outside world, as well as from organs and systems of the human body. It is they who analyze it, produce this or that reaction and transmit it back.
If there is a failure in this chain, then the result will be unsightly and sometimes dangerous. Depression does not occur on level ground. The influence is exerted by several different factors at once. Most often these are abnormalities in the work of the brain and neural connections. The brain ceases to generate adequate signals, which causes the above problems.
Due to the slowing down of metabolic processes, somatic disorders arise: constipation, heartburn, headache, skin rashes appear.
Diagnosis and treatment
The diagnosis is made on the basis of the symptoms and condition of the patient. Laboratory methods based on studies of the chemical composition of body fluids and biocurrents of the brain are still being developed.
Treatment is prescribed depending on the form of the disease. There are two of them: dysthymia and the so-called “major depression”. About a third of patients fall into the second group. Such a depression can last up to 12 weeks and, if not treated, it flows into a chronic form. In turn, it is of two types: atypical and seasonally dependent, which passes with an increase in daylight hours. The first is characterized by increased appetite and drowsiness. Suffering from such depression tend to deny everything. Antidepressants are used for treatment.
Dysthymia is characterized by mild forms of depression, which can last for years. The disease sometimes subsides for a couple of months, but returns again. Not bad treated with psychopharmacological drugs.
In addition, there is a double depression. The combined form of major and dysthymic depression can cause more serious consequences.
Drug treatment involves the use of three types of antidepressants: tricyclic, MAO inhibitors and second-generation antidepressants with action on serotonin reuptake. The whole trouble is that from the moment of reception to the tangible effect a large amount of time passes. As a rule, up to six weeks.
How and what does Amaranth affect
The results of research on amaranth microflora. In the state of Kerala (India) Amaranth Spinous juice from time immemorial has been used for
reduce abdominal swelling. Leaves of the plant, cooked without salt, were used to treat jaundice. In the traditional Indian system of medicine, Ayurveda is used as an antipyretic, laxative, diuretic, antidiabetic and antidote for snake bites. They are treated for gonorrhea, bronchitis, blood diseases and used to induce an abortion.
The pigments contained in the stem part help well in oncology, the fight against parasites and viruses (read “Amaranth oil and cancer treatment: research results”). Amaranth is a good antioxidant. It is used to care for the skin, nails and oral cavity (“Amaranth in Dentistry”) and in the treatment of diabetes (“Amaranth oil and type 2 diabetes. How the product helps people: research results”). This is all well known, but what is it as an antidepressant?
laboratory mouse Indian scientists have decided to find out the antidepressant effect of Amaranth. They prepared a water-alcohol solution of Amaranthus spinosus, which was used for experiments on rats. Forced (forced) swimming (FST) and tail suspension (TST) tests were widely used in psychotherapy. As a reference standard, anti-depressants Escitalopram and Imipramine, respected by doctors today, were used.
Before the experiments, the researchers evaluated the composition of the content of steroids, alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, carbohydrates, proteins and phenolic compounds. All this was present in him in great proportions.
In the course of the experiments, the complete absence of toxicity of the drug to the oral cavity of rats was revealed even when taking a large dose (2000 mg / kg). Experimental animals were divided into five groups. Two fed with standard means, one with nothing at all, and the last two took different doses of Amaranth solution one hour before the tests.
Scientists spotted the time during which the rats continued to actively deal with the water element in the first, and with the uncomfortable position in the second experiment. Comparison of the results of the first test showed that Amaranth is almost not inferior to Escitalopram and is slightly inferior to Imipramin. But the second test showed its complete superiority over these antidepressants. Animals that took Amaranth did not want to give up longer than others.
The fact is that Amaranthus spinosus solution contains a large number of amino acids, namely, lysine, arginine, histidine, cysteine, phenylalanine, leucine, isoleucine, valine, threonine, methionine, tryptophan and tyrosine. These amino acids contribute to positive antioxidant activity. In addition, beta-carotene, thiamine, riboflavin, nicotinic, ascorbic acid and carotenoids also show a good result.
It was previously found that flavonoids and phenolic compounds have several positive biological effects on the central nervous system. And their entire deposits in Amarante! Rutin is recognized as an important component of the Hypericum tinctures used in many countries to treat various forms of depression. In Amarante rutin too. On other useful components can be found in the article “What is squalene or an amazing hydrocarbon in detail.”
The results of the experiments make it possible to assert that Amaranth can be effectively used in the treatment of mental disorders. Although further studies of properties are necessary, scientists are already pinning great hopes on this “well of health”.
