We continue to acquaint you with the studies of foreign scientists who are studying how amaranth can be effective in the treatment of certain diseases. Today we are publishing materials from the Chilean site Amaranto El Alimento del Future.
On its pages were published articles on the research of Mexican scientists. In particular, they studied how amaranth beverages can help in the treatment of depression and a number of other diseases, including:
- metabolic problems;
- muscle pain.
General information about research
Representatives of the chemistry department of the National Autonomous University of Mexico have developed a nutritious drink. It is intended for persons who suffer from the above diseases – physical and psychological.
The drink, which at the time of writing this article is in the patenting stage, has a balanced composition – these are several amino acids, protein, as well as lysine, tryptophan and basic medical amino acids.
“All people can suffer from depression at different periods of life. Amaranth contains a large amount of tryptophan and aromatic amino acids, which, when ingested, are transformed into serotonin and have a stimulating effect on the brain, ”said Mexican scientist Manuel Soriano, one of the creators of the drink.
In addition, as noted by the researchers, the following components are present in the composition of the developed product:
- polyunsaturated fatty acids include omega-6, omega-3;
- squalene, which helps lower blood cholesterol;
- antioxidants such as tocopherols (alpha-delta) and tocotrienols;
- calcium, an essential element for teeth and bones (for example, calcium hydroxyphosphate);
- iron, which is an important component for hemoglobin, which transports oxygen in the blood throughout the body, and plays an important role in various metabolic reactions.
What other diseases can drink handle?
A product developed by Mexican scientists can also be useful for people who suffer from food allergies. For example, for children who do not tolerate milk or other dairy products.
In addition, this drink is recommended for patients with certain types of metabolic disorders, osteoporosis and muscle pain.
Interestingly, … amaranth is present in the diet of Mexicans, who use it to make sweets, pasta, soups and salads.
Amaranth production problems
However, scientists argue that the production of amaranth in Mexico does not have adequate support, ranging from technical advice on growing to marketing the products obtained. The whole chain – from sowing to marketing – needs qualified specialists.
Thus, in 2006, about 3,300 tons of amaranth seeds were produced in Mexico. In total, according to experts of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, there are about 60 genera and 800 species of this plant.
Amaranth was known among the ancient Mexicans as a “flower of immortality” and was cultivated in most of modern Mexico. However, the Spanish colonialists banned the cultivation of amaranth and destroyed it in every possible way. This was due to the fact that the Indians used the plant and its seeds in their religious rites, including for the presentation of the god of the sun, the god of war and the national god of the Aztecs Huitzilopochtli.
Another study proves how effective the use of amaranth can be in the treatment and prevention of certain diseases.
Today the plant is becoming increasingly popular. Products from it are found not only in specialized stores, but also in pharmacies, ordinary grocery supermarkets. The planting area is gradually increasing. What confirms the prospects of amaranth!
