In the previous article we shared the experience of our readers. She told how to properly harvest amaranth leaves. We also asked her to tell about how she grows a plant in her summer cottage. In this article, she kindly shares her experience.
We are sure that the material will be useful not only to novice gardeners, but also experienced ones, who first decided to plant amaranth at their dacha.
How to grow amaranth on the dacha area
It is possible to plant a shchiritsa, as directly seeds, and seedling. It is important to choose the right site for landing. Best suited land on which there is no shady parts, which is a lot of light. Yes, and the ground itself should be quite nutritious.
On the maturation of amaranth takes an average of 3 to 4 months. And it is absolutely unimportant, what varieties are we talking about – vegetable or decorative.
If you are going to grow a plant from seeds, then planting them before the beginning of May hardly makes sense. The soil should warm up to 10 degrees at a depth of five centimeters.
Before sowing seeds need to fertilize the soil. Any mineral mix will do for this – you can buy it at any store for gardeners. But when using mineral fertilizers, fertilizing it is important to correctly calculate the dosage. Since amaranth has a unique feature to convert nitrogen contained in fertilizers into nitrates.
You do not need any special tools for sowing seeds. You can sow them manually. But here it is important to be attentive – no more than one seed should be used for every seven centimeters of soil. Then the crops will not be too thick, the plants will develop normally, without shading each other. Distances between rows – 40-45 centimeters.
The first shoots will appear above the ground in about 9-10 days. If necessary, it will be necessary to thin the sprouts.
I also like this way of planting amaranth. Seeds sown in small wooden containers with soil from the cottage somewhere in March. Closer to April. The depth of the containers I have is 8 centimeters.
Soil necessarily moisten and sow the seeds to a depth of 1.5 centimeters. Then I put the box in a bright and warm place. The temperature for the seeds to germinate well should be about 20 degrees. Well, of course, plus or minus a couple of degrees.
You need to make sure that the seedlings do not suffer from hypothermia. That is, it is not advisable to put the boxes on the windowsills, if you have old windows from which the wind can blow.
Another important point – moistening seedlings. I spray it from a spray bottle – there is no strict periodicity. You need to look to the soil does not dry out, was always quite wet. If all abide by, then the first shoots will appear no later than a week.
After the emergence of sprouts must also be thinned. Removed the weakest shoots. It is necessary to leave enough free space so that the sprouts do not shade each other, do not clog each other.
When a sprout appears two separate, fairly powerful leaves, it should be transplanted into a separate container. For example, in a plastic cup. Landing on open ground is carried out towards the end of May, and if the temperature does not allow it, even at the beginning of June. That is, when the weather is already established quite stable, warm. Handy amaranth
Before transplanting sprouts, I definitely spend the fertilizer soil. For this I use nitroammofosku. Approximately 20 grams per square meter of planting soil. Between seedlings I make a distance of about 15 centimeters. It’s enough. I read somewhere that the distance can be done up to 30 centimeters, but I’m not sure that this is correct. There is a lot of free space left. Although, perhaps, we are talking about some very large varieties of amaranth. Aisle – up to 50 centimeters, but not less than 45 centimeters.
Plant – annual only
Amarant calm withstand lowering the temperature to 0 degrees. Therefore, it can be on the beds until the end of September. Although the plant – one-year. Even during warm winters, it cannot remain in the ground during the cold season.
After the crop is harvested, all remaining amaranth must be removed and recycled.
The leaves and seeds are harvested. Even the stems can be used for drying subsequent use in cooking.
But what is left in the garden doesn’t just need to be thrown away or burned. I collect all the remnants of amaranth in the compost pit. It turns out very good fertilizer for the next year.
How to properly care for amaranth
Why do I love amaranth? In addition to its special taste and health benefits? For the fact that after disembarking, he no longer requires special attention to himself. But still need a little work with him. To get a good harvest of a large plant – there will be good leaves, a lot of seeds.
Care involves the following:
- periodic watering, but as often as possible;
- top dressing;
- weeding and loosening the ground;
- fight against parasites, insects.
Amaranth irrigation rules: when and how much
Especially a lot of water the plant needs in the first four weeks after planting. To plant strengthened and roots crept as deep as possible into the ground. After a month of cultivation about watering, you can no longer worry. If, of course, the summer is not too dry and it rains at least occasionally. Gardens with amaranth
The amaranth root system is quite developed, powerful. Which makes it sustainable, even if grown varieties up to one and a half meters. They will be quite stable in strong winds, will not break and do not fall.
How to conduct dressing
Proper feeding – the key to a good harvest. It should be carried out at the first time after planting or planting seedlings. Then amaranth will quickly get stronger, put down strong roots and begin to grow actively.
The optimal solution for feeding is either ordinary wood ash, or mullein solution. That is, nothing extraordinary, expensive and chemical.
By the way, if the land is fertilized before planting, the subsequent fertilizer may not be required. But I still recommend at least a little feeding amaranth. Believe me, the effort and time spent will pay off a cool harvest.
Weeding and loosening the land in the beds with amaranth
Weeding is carried out only if weeds begin to appear on the bed. Often there are not so many of them, but you should not give them too much freedom. I fight them immediately after the appearance.
But loosening is done every time after polya beds or rains. Because water contributes to the appearance of a crust on the ground, which will prevent water from entering the ground.
How to deal with insects and various diseasesAmarant in the country
In general, the plant is quite resistant to various diseases, it is practically not attacked by insects. Except such as aphids and weevils.
For example, weevil can impede the development of stems. If its larvae settle there. But aphid is dangerous only in the first few weeks after germination. In addition, it appears only in too wet weather.
To fight insects, you can use special preparations. For example, I use Karbofos. It is enough. But you can try and “Aktellik” – they say, also quite effective, although I personally did not try it on my plants.
High humidity levels can cause fungus. To neutralize it, you need to use copper sulfate or copper oxychloride.
We harvest amaranth
How to store amaranth and collect it – I told in detail in my last letter. I repeat that I use almost all parts of the house – leaves, stems, seeds. I keep in a dark place. Amaranth
Separately, I note how I collect amaranth seeds. I carefully cut off panicles, hang them up in the attic of the country house – there I am quiet, calm, the birds do not penetrate, there are no rodents. When they are completely dry, I rub the panicles in my hands, and then sift the seeds through a fine sieve.
Collect panicles need a little earlier than all the seeds ripen. Because they ripen not evenly. And if you wait until everything is ripe, the part will simply fall out even in the garden.
That’s how I grow amaranth and collect it. There is nothing complicated. Just a little desire and a little bit of work. No special worries. But it is possible to get a good crop of nutritious plants. And then enjoy it all winter!
Bon appetit and success in growing! If you have questions, ask. Be sure to share my experiences and secrets.
