Earlier, we have already briefly mentioned a new variety of amaranth called Kines. Judging by the comments under that article, he interested our readers, and therefore we decided to study it in more detail.
The material was based on an article written by Kazarin V.F., Kazarina A.V., Marunova L.K. from the Research Institute “Volga Research Institute of Breeding and Seed Production. Pn Konstantinov, which researchers are a new plant.
According to the authors of the study, in recent years, interest in non-traditional multi-purpose cultures has increased significantly. Among which – and amaranth. As the experience of cultivation of amaranth in the Volga region, the plant has the following characteristics:
- heat resistance;
- drought resistance;
- high yield, both fodder and grain.
What made amaranth an interesting plant from the point of view of agriculture.
Materials and methods of research varieties Kines
Experimental studies of the new variety were carried out over a period of two years – from 2011 to 2013 in the forest-steppe zone of the central part of the Samara region in the fields of breeding crop rotation of the FSUE “Povolzhsky NIISS”. The standard values of the study were taken indicators of the variety Kinelsky 254.
During the field experiments, the researchers carried out the necessary observations, made records, and also analyzed the data, based on generally accepted guidelines.
Results and discussion of research
As the authors of the research note, it is in the scientific research institute “Volga Research Institute for Breeding and Seed Production named after Pn Konstantinov ”for the first time in the Volga region began to conduct research amaranth. In particular, the first experiments were conducted in 1992. Their goal is to identify the forms and varieties that have the most vivid, valuable economic and biological characteristics.
Thanks to the research conducted, in 2004 the Kinelsky variety 254 was introduced into the state register of breeding achievements. It has the following characteristics:
- green mass yield up to 70 tons per hectare of arable area without irrigation;
- yield of green mass up to 95 tons per hectare of cultivated area with irrigation.
However, even with so many virtues, the variety has a significant disadvantage — unstable seed productivity, which is mainly due to the long growing season.
That is why researchers, breeders were given a new task – to create a special variety of amaranth grain areas of use with a shorter growing season.
As a result of research, a variety with the required characteristics was obtained, and in 2015 it was entered in the State Register of Breeding Achievements. The peculiarity of the new variety, called Kines, is rapid maturation. Its growing season from germination to seed maturation was 86 days, which is 18 days less than the standard, which in this case is the Kinelsky variety 254.
More information about the comparative characteristics of both varieties in the table.
More about Kines variety
The new variety Kines is able to form a consistently high seed yield, significantly exceeding the standard.
Variety Kines is an annual plant. Amaranth height ranges from 130 to 160 centimeters. It has weak bushiness, and the leaves have a pronounced green color. Inflorescence – from 70 to 80 centimeters, its density is average, and the color is yellow. Grains – discoid, white. The weight of 1000 units of seeds does not exceed 0.80 grams.
The duration of the growing season of the Kines variety varies from 86 to 89 days. The main characteristics of Kines:
- intense growth;
- unpretentiousness to soil composition;
- increased resistance to drought, salts;
- increased resistance to pests and diseases.
Separately, it is worth noting the yield of a new variety – from one hectare is collected:
- up to 18 tons of dry matter;
- up to 3 tons of seeds.
The content of protein in the grain – up to 20%, oil – up to 10%.
Summing up the sort of kines
The researchers of the Kines variety have noted that it has the highest productivity, as well as increased resistance to abiotic stressors. Separately allocated high manufacturability, thanks to which the plant is cultivated without the use of any pesticides. That guarantees high-quality, environmentally friendly products.
Kines seeds are suitable for obtaining high-quality oil, which can be used both in food and for medical purposes, as well as for making flour, various beverages, cereals.
The Kines variety is also recommended for use in the production of dehydrated silage and feed for cattle – it is an excellent green supplement.
