There is a very common theory that eye diseases, especially nearsightedness and farsightedness, provoke an excessive stay at the computer (tablet, smartphone – it’s necessary to emphasize). This conviction replaced another that was before him: nearsightedness and farsightedness causes constant reading.

There is no evidence of either the first or the second. Science puts forward directly opposite hypotheses, and parents, disturbed by the vision of their children, do not know which one to believe and whether it is worth strictly limiting the time that a child spends behind the monitor.

Recently, in the English The Second Opinion, it was suggested that both computers and their paper books have little influence on the development of myopia (myopia), as well as astigmatism, which often accompanies myopia. Instead, the researchers suggested another hypothesis, namely, that the main risk factor is the nutrition of the modern city man, and not reading at all. Today we will tell about this hypothesis, which has received a lot of evidence, as well as the role that amaranth can play in this case.

The primal eye of the primitive man
Primitive people had much better eyesight than modern ones. First, it confirms a number of archaeological finds, namely, rock art samples, which could only be made by a person with a very sharp eye. These are images of objects and phenomena that our ancestors could observe only from afar due to the lack of physical ability to approach them. Nevertheless, at trewsunkah we could see details that a modern person at such a distance could see, possessing only very powerful eyesight – or auxiliary equipment.

Of course, the eyes of primitive man did not know about the brightness of megacities and were not constantly blinded by the surrounding artificial light. Therefore, the reason is not only in visual acuity, but also in his habits (there are habits at the eyes too, which was proven in the USA in the last century). But in the “sharp eyes” of our ancestors can not refuse.

This is confirmed by one simple fact: with poor eyesight they simply would not have survived. The overwhelming majority of predatory animals and birds are either comparable to human vision, or much stronger. People could not get food for themselves if the tribes had a lot of myopic ones, and predators would have very quickly exterminated a person even at that time when relatively large societies did not speak, and people lived together, three, four together (and sometimes alone). Nevertheless, man more or less successfully resisted the predators.

About heredity

In part, this is evidence that myopia is not inherited. For a primitive man, good vision was one of the most important survival factors. Nearsighted people more often died tribesmen with good eyesight, but often had time to leave offspring. Their children may well have lived a long life, the race continued successfully, so it’s impossible to talk about myopia as a genetic factor of evolution.

“History” of myopia
The number of cases of myopia increased dramatically by almost two and a half times in a few centuries – when people moved to the cities. In ancient Greece, the problem of “fading eyesight” was known quite widely, and in Alexandria, the city-ancestor of science, the first scientific works on this topic appeared. Most of them burned with the Library of Alexandria, but vague references to them are found in more recent times. From which, in fact, we can conclude that the Greeks suffered with myopia.

It suffered in other major cities, not only antiquity, but also later. Especially the problem affected the nobility, a little less uchenyj – people who knew the letter. From all this, gradually formed the view that education, or rather the reading of books, entails poor eyesight. The correlation was so obvious that scientists at that time and later began to develop this hypothesis and find out how the books affect the eyes.

This is how the most widely spread theory of the connection between reading and myopia was formed. Research, since the Enlightenment, it was confirmed. Myopia developed in one of three children who learned to read and write. More than 40% of people who have dedicated their lives to education, by the age of 50, either myopia, or astigmatism, or hyperopia appeared. And peasant children who did not know how to read or write, myopia developed very rarely – two or three out of a hundred people. Older farmers had slightly more problems with their eyesight: 10-15 people out of 100 suffered from them. But still, the “rural” indicators sharply contrasted with the “urban” indicators.

By the twentieth century, the stereotype was firmly established: a young man with glasses is an intellectual, a child with glasses is different in his mind, and older, educated people without glasses are generally nonsense.

Glasses – not a consequence of reading?

Almost all references to the shortsightedness of our ancestors were concentrated in areas of modern Western Europe. Despite the relatively considerable amount of information about the life of Eastern peoples at the same time, in Asian countries, especially closer to the south, there were no actual indications of the often-encountered poor eyesight of local residents. But in Asia, too, formed major cities, education spread.

Secrets-successes-education-in-China At the beginning of the current millennium, British scientists paid attention to this discrepancy and conducted a study in which they found out what percentage of the population in different countries suffers from myopia. The results were curious.

The native inhabitants of Western European countries and the United States showed myopia in 25-30% of cases (depending on the country). Visitors in the same countries – in 45-50% of cases. In Canada, the disease was found in 15% of the indigenous population and in 25% of visitors. In Eastern Europe and the Asian part of Russia, 40–45% of the total population suffers from myopia equally: both indigenous and immigrant have approximately the same rates. In China, myopia is observed in 40% of the population, in Australia and New Zealand – in 15%, in India – in 15%.

It is obvious that in Canada and New Zealand the level of education is sufficient and there are much more educated people than in India. At the same time, it roughly corresponds to the level of education in the States and in Western Europe, and the percentage of people with myopia is not at all the same. In Russia and Eastern Europe, few people who read are more common than in Canada, but people with poor eyesight are also more common.

In short, the results demanded a revision of the theory that has prevailed until now – about the connection between reading, education, and myopia.

Glasses – a consequence of nutrition
Thus, a new theory was advanced, which was that myopia correlates with eating habits.

It appeared not just like that. It is known that substances that affect human growth in an inordinate amount lead to various disorders, for example, to uncontrolled cell division, which often leads to cancer. 1489742815 Scientists have admitted that myopia can also be associated with these substances, since the overwhelming number of cases of myopia in the world is axial myopia or, more simply, myopia caused by too large an eyeball. It is observed at any age from infancy to old age. Although in children and young people, the incidence of axial myopia among all its varieties is more than 90%, and in the elderly – 75–85%. But this is also a sufficient indicator.

Scientists studied the basket of products of the average consumer in all of the listed countries with an eye to the fact that they were natives or visitors (and, accordingly, did the food habits of their fellow citizens bring with them). Almost one hundred percent of the above statistics on the incidence of myopia in the world corresponded to the presence and quantity of food in the food basket, which contributes to the development of IGF-1 – insulin-like growth factor 1.

IGF-1 – what is it?
IGF-1, also known as IGF-1, is a polypeptide compound that plays a significant role in the endocrine, paracrine and autocrine regulation of the growth, formation, and igf-1 development of body tissues. Simply put, it is a protein, with whose direct participation hormones and other substances are formed, thanks to which a continuous process of cell renewal and, as a result, the tissues of which a person is composed is possible.

It would seem very useful and necessary protein. In general, the way it is: with its normal concentration in the body, a person is energetic, has no problems with sleep, has a good reaction, the ability to recover quickly from injuries and is aging more slowly, because the processes of tissue renewal do not overtake the aging processes, but their speed as a rule, when quite high. But this is at normal concentration.

The catch is that the level of IGF-1 in more than 2/3 of the world’s population goes beyond the norm.

For some, it is lowered. This entails permanent lethargy and apathy, reduced libido, unhealthy complexion and thinness, and sometimes, on the contrary, obesity due to the fact that the body tries to get more energy from food. People with low levels of IGF-1 experience insomnia, persistent dental problems. Hair and nails are often brittle. Also, such people have lowered immunity, which is why they constantly get sick, and not only colds, but also more serious diseases caused by viral or bacterial infections. All this together leads to premature aging.

But mainly in people with impaired IGF-1 levels, there has been an increase. Externally, it does not manifest itself as strongly as the reduced level of this substance. Most often, obesity is detected from the external manifestations of an elevated level of IGF-1, from which other violations, not directly related to IGF-1, follow. From time to time, hormonal disruptions caused by an imbalance of hormones are observed. Treating them, like 300px-IGF-1rn, hormone replacement therapy – quite successfully. In the sense that the symptoms disappear, the hormonal balance is restored, and the person is quite healthy in this regard for some time.

The danger of an increased level of IGF-1 is that its unhealthy activity in the body is already manifested in the form of serious symptoms caused by changes, which can be reversed. That is, the growth of cells and tissues in excess of the established norm. The norm, of course, is not established by doctors, but by the body of a particular person. That is, each has its own, as well as each individual size of the heart, liver, brain or arms and legs of different lengths.

Back in the 90s, twenty years after the discovery of IGF-1, it was found out that this substance provokes heterogeneous neoplasms – often benign, but sometimes malignant. Therefore, an excessively high level of IGF-1 is still considered a risk factor in oncology.

In 2009, it was found that a high level of IGF-1 does lead to an increase in the eyeball, which directly leads to myopia.

Enlarged eyeball and myopia
Anatomically, myopia is a “technical” disturbance in the optical system of the eye. Normally, the light rays that our eye perceives are refracting and focusing on the retina, where the image is formed. With myopia, the focus point is slightly shifted forward, which is why the picture is formed not on the retina, but in front of it. Therefore, a person suffering from this disease sees the image vaguely, he has to peer, and he peers, in fact, not at the object in front of him, but at the miopiya image in his own eye, which is farther than it should be. Accordingly, the farther from the retina an image is formed, the more turbid it appears to a person and the stronger his shortsightedness. This distance is measured in diopters.

There are several reasons for myopia. Sometimes the lens increases, causing disease. The percentage of lens myopia is the smallest of all its varieties. There is corneal myopia when the cornea of ​​the eye is enlarged. Almost always, corneal myopia is accompanied by axial – when the axial size of the eyeball increases. Most often there is axial myopia without corneal. The eyeball as if moves the focus point of the image from the retina with its excessively large size. The fault in this case lies more than half on IGF-1: if this substance were not too much, the eyeball would not grow so.

Where does IGF-1 come from
IGF-1, being a protein, is formed primarily from amino acids, like all other proteins. But not from all, but from those that are formed by the consumption of such food as:

  • meat, mainly chicken, a little less – beef, even less – pork;
  • low-fat meat products;
  • a fish;
  • boiled eggs;
  • low-fat cottage cheese, low-fat cheeses, skimmed milk and milk with a low percentage of fat.

In general, IGF-1 is synthesized as a result of the use of almost all animal proteins (with good digestibility, of course). Most of all – when eating meat. However, its amount of saturated fats significantly reduces, especially when used together with protein dishes. That is why the synthesis of IGF-1 in the use of chicken is higher than in the use of pork: there is much more saturated fat in pork meat. The same goes for fatty and low-fat dairy products. Eggs, if boiled, will practically contain no saturated fats, but scrambled eggs cooked in sunflower oil will be very rich in these substances.

There is still a nuance. Synthesized IGF-1 in the human body is especially active in the use of refined products – sugar, butter and almost all others.

This explains why urban residents have a much higher IGF-1 level than rural people. Residents of villages and villages rarely use the above-mentioned products in a fat-free form, while residents of cities, especially megacities, are much more likely to encounter skimmed dairy products. And since city dwellers traditionally monitor the diet and the figure of much more rural, they prefer chicken and boiled eggs to fatty beef or oily fish.

Also in the grocery basket of a city dweller there are significantly more refined products than in the food of a country dweller.

If you associate these data with statistics on the incidence of myopia by country, much becomes obvious. In vegetarian countries, for example, in India, residents cannot have a high level of IGF-1 in principle, since there are very few proteins that make up this substance into the body of Hindus. The same applies to Canada, the United States and Western Europe. Firstly, there are a lot of vegetarians there. Secondly, the indigenous population of these regions, as a rule, keeps a close eye on their food and tries to exclude refined products, since they are considered harmful. And it is no secret that Eastern Europeans often combine low-fat protein products with refined ones.

At the same time, people can read a lot or a little, work at a computer constantly or rarely, have several gadgets or not have one. Of course, with books, tablets and laptops, your eyes can be overtaxed. Often, a strong overstrain leads to various eye diseases – from inflammatory processes to lens opacity. However, with the development of myopia, it is connected far not as much as is commonly believed.

Against the background of the above, several questions appear:

How to normalize the level of IGF-1 and not overdo it, bringing it to a point above or below the norm?

To help solve these problems may be different diets. Each of them, as a rule, has its pros and cons. Ideal diets do not exist: there are diets that suit a particular person or not. If a person is healthy initially, the word “diet” in the medical sense loses its relevance for him, and it is better for him to formulate a certain diet for himself – with or without a nutritionist. For example, if a person knows his food habits, body characteristics (digestibility of certain products, intolerance, etc.) and understands the basic principles of dietology, then he can make a diet on his own. If, nevertheless, there is a need for the formulation of a diet in the medical sense, it is better to contact a specialist.

But a few general recommendations exist, regardless of the individual state of the person (more or less healthy).

Normalization of the level of IGF-1 with amaranth
The main condition among all that provide a normal level of IGF-1 is the balance of animal proteins and saturated fats in the diet.

Normally, a healthy person should consume about 64 grams of protein per day. This is a pure substance, not a protein product (that is, a product in which there is more protein than other components). You can see the amount of proteins in any product in special databases of nutritional value and caloric content of products on the Internet. It is also indicated on product packaging.

For the normal level of IGF-1 (and not only for it, as well as for the normalization of metabolism and for good digestibility), it is important that these 64 g consist of both animal and vegetable proteins, and not just any one species. . Animal protein should be not less than 25 g and not more than 40 g, the rest – vegetable.

It is also important to ensure that both types of proteins:

a) contain essential amino acids;

b) well assimilated.

The content of essential amino acids in animal proteins, as well as in dishes of meat, fish, eggs and dairy products can also be found in the tables of nutritional value. All the above products contain essential amino acids, and the only task is to prepare them in such a way that the amino acids are not lost during processing.

In plant foods, essential amino acids are significantly less. Amaranth is one of their main sources. Among the many vegetable protein products in it and one of the highest percentages of protein, and the largest number of essential amino acids in the protein. This primarily concerns amaranth seeds, as well as cereals and other products made from seeds.

Thus, to obtain the required amount of proteins, which, among other things, will contribute to the production of IGF-1 in a normal amount, it is enough to consume a little daily or dairy products, or eggs, or fish, or meat, as well as about 400 g of amaranth porridge (weight is indicated for fully cooked food with plenty of water, which is the lion’s share of this weight).

Interesting! Of course, analogs of amaranth porridge will suit (naturally, these are other cereals), but they will have to be eaten much more in order to get the required amount of proteins and non-active amino acids. Along with proteins, the amount of carbohydrates will increase proportionally, which is not suitable for those who lead a medium-mobile lifestyle or want to lose weight. In particular, amaranth is why it is considered one of the most favorable products for losing weight.

As for saturated fats, they should be no more than 22 grams and not less than 19 grams in a daily ration. As a rule, 19 grams of saturated fats in a normal ration are recruited automatically, and it is important to ensure that they are not more than necessary. Here amaranth oil is useful. How is amaranth oil better than sunflower? The fact is that if you fry the same eggs in sunflower oil, and then eat something else fatty, the level of saturated fat is more likely to exceed the normal range. Why – because sunflower oil contains mostly saturated fats and very little unsaturated. In the amaranth balance, fats are much more attractive: there are a lot of polyunsaturated fats in it, a lot of monounsaturated fats, and less than a third saturated. Thus, if the same eggs fry on it, the amount of saturated fat in the finished product will be low and will not go beyond the norm. At the same time, in addition to proteins and saturated fats, unsaturated fats will be present in the eggs, which the body needs for other reasons (read about the benefits of unsaturated fats here).

Thus, the human body, in the diet of which amaranth cereals and amaranth oil are present, will receive the required amount of proteins, but the animal proteins that provoke the production of IGF-1 will remain within the normal range. He will also receive the required amount of saturated fat in order for them to keep the amount of IGF-1 in the blood at a normal level, but this type of fat will not harm the body, because it will, in turn, be controlled by unsaturated fats.

Lowering the level of IGF-1 with amaranth
If a person constantly monitors his diet and consumed proteins and fats in the proportions described above, then the amount of IGF-1 in his body will not create any problems. But what to do if a person constantly eats a lot of animal proteins, but is low in fat, what often happens when, for example, people try to lose weight, build muscle or dry their body, etc.? Lower the IGF-1 level.

You can reduce it in two ways – to abandon animal protein, or start eating more saturated fat. Both ways are fraught with unpleasant consequences: proteins are the main material that makes up the body, and saturated fats are low-density fats that in large quantities “clog up” cells, blood and the body in principle. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully lower the IGF-1 level.

Nutritionists recommend leaving proteins in the diet in the same amount that they are required for healthy functioning of the body. That is, in the proportions that were given above. And focus on fats. More precisely, simply increase the intake of all types of fats compared to the norm.

The daily norm for an adult is, as we have said, 19-21 g of saturated fat, as well as 20-22 g of monounsaturated and 20-22 g of polyunsaturated. In total – about 60 grams of fat per day. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats control the level of saturated fats, splitting them. With normal consumption of unsaturated fats, saturated does not cause harm, because the body “takes” the fats it needs – for unsaturated fats – for the structure of cell membranes, and refers to saturated fats only when unsaturated fats do not enter the body.

Important! Unsaturated fats in total should still be more than half. Otherwise, the body quickly forms their deficiency and saturated fats will begin to harm simply because there is no resistance in the form of unsaturated fats.

For saturated fats to suppress IGF-1 and not to harm it, it is enough to include more amaranth oil in the diet. The balance of fats in it almost corresponds to the calculated norm of 20/22/22 (saturated / monounsaturated / polyunsaturated). Almost – because the unsaturated fats in amaranth oil are slightly more than required. But it is enough to compensate simply by eating a little fat cottage cheese, sour cream or butter.

With the same amount of animal protein (i.e., the same level of production of IGF-1) and an increased amount of saturated fat (substances that lower its level), the latter will quickly deal with the excess of IGF-1. And “amaranth” unsaturated fats, in turn, will not allow saturated to begin its destructive action. As a rule, it takes 2-3 months to normalize the level of IGF-1. After that, the amount of fat in the diet can be reduced to normal.

Note! During these 2-3 months, you need to move more, sign up for an additional sports section or otherwise increase calorie consumption, because more fat in the diet is always more calories. Since saturated fats tend to be quickly deposited, it is important to have time to burn them before that, otherwise there is a risk of getting better by a couple of kilograms.

Refined products, IGF-1 and amaranth
Refined products are useless carbohydrates in pure form. “Useless” here is not an emotional assessment, but a statement of fact: there are no substances in these carbohydrates that could be of any benefit to the body. There is no refined products and any other nutrients – vitamins, minerals.

But at the same time, these carbohydrates are very well and quickly absorbed (if there is no individual intolerance, but few people have intolerance to refined oil or high-grade wheat flour). The response to the appearance of carbohydrates is the production of insulin, whose main function is to regulate the carbohydrate metabolism in the body. Accordingly, the use of a large number of carbohydrates provokes a sharp jump in insulin levels in the blood.

Here it is worth recalling the word “insulin-like” in the name of IGF-1. This substance regulates carbohydrate metabolism in much the same way as insulin, which is why it got its name. When a large amount of carbohydrates enters the body, the production of IGF-1 also increases. But carbohydrate is “handled” by ordinary insulin, with the result that the IGF-1 produced is free and not bound by any other proteins. And in such a free form, he begins to act much more actively than he acts, being bound. The result is the same – uncontrolled cell division, which often leads to cancer (which is why the use of refined products is also among the risk factors in oncology), and an increase in organs, among which the eyeball is one of the first.

Amaranth, as mentioned above, is one of the best vegetable sources of protein. Unlike animal proteins, it does not provoke the production of IGF-1, but is able to reduce the amount of free IGF-1 by “linking” it with its own proteins. Also among all plant foods, amaranth contains the minimum amount of carbohydrates for the maximum amount of protein. As a consequence, less insulin is required to regulate amaranth carbohydrates. This is, firstly, important for people with a high risk of developing diabetes, and secondly, it is important if there has already been a jump in insulin the day before due to the consumption of a large amount of refined carbohydrates.

Unfortunately, amaranth grain somehow contains carbohydrates, so it cannot be called the ideal regulator of the amount of free IGF-1 in the blood: it is simply the lesser of the possible evils.

Against this background, the only recommendation regarding refined products is brief and definite: do not eat them! Refusing white flour, refined oil, refined sugar and refined rice for the sake of their health is not so difficult.


Amaranth VS myopia
For those who do not want to understand all these subtleties and just want to know whether amaranth is able to withstand myopia, let us summarize. It consists of two questions that it makes sense to answer.

Question one:

Can amaranth cure myopia?
The answer is no. Myopia often develops due to an increase in the size of the eyeball due to increased IGF-1. Even if the level of IGF-1 to reduce what amaranth is capable of, the eyeball will not decrease: it has already been deformed, it is impossible to reverse the process in a natural way. Here only laser correction will help, as a result of which the focus point in the optical system of the eye, or another operation, will be artificially shifted. They are now enough. Taking pills, herbs, oils, and anything else does not help here.

Question two:

Can amaranth prevent myopia?

The answer is yes. The balance of fats in amaranth oil is close to ideal (for humans, based on the daily intake of fats). Saturated fats control the level of IGF-1 in the blood, and unsaturated, in their turn, control the level of saturated. Also the role in the IGF-1 level can be played by amaranth cereals and other dishes made from amaranth grain. They contain a large amount of vegetable protein, which, unlike animal proteins, does not provoke the production of IGF-1, but it is a complete protein with a high content of essential amino acids.

IGF-1 level control for losing weight

If you try not to eat fat, because you lose weight, it is not necessary to rebuild your diet. In order to prevent myopia, it is enough to use a spoonful of amaranth oil on an empty stomach. So you get all the necessary types of fat in almost perfect quantities, and this spoon will not affect the figure.
