Growing of microgreen becomes not only fashionable, but also profitable occupation, type of business. Entrepreneurs who have chosen this field of activity are young people, top managers of various companies, sometimes not even associated with agricultural production. They take up the cultivation of crops that are gaining popularity among the residents of large cities, among which an amaranth and its greenery are increasingly preferred.
Microgreens Market Experts
So far, microgreen amaranth on the market is considered a farmer’s novelty, and today it’s too early to talk about its volumes, experts say. The fact is that these products are produced not only by farmers in the usual sense for us, but also by people who are just beginning to “probe” the market and grow microgreen in their homes. Natalia Ryzhkova, the founder of the Microgrin company, for example, is confident that in each major city several manufacturers are working in this direction, and this is felt by competing for customers such as restaurants.
There were also customers for amaranth microgreen. These are supermarkets, restaurants, vegetarian cafes and shops, as well as some food delivery services. As Yana Gariga, an entrepreneur from the Ternopil region, noted, today there is a great demand for amaranth: the microgreen of this culture is often chosen because of its bright red color. They get amaranth micro-greens for cooking first courses, salads, as decoration or as a component of a vitamin cocktail.
According to the observations of Ivan Vorobyov, the founder of the Odessa company Portsia Zdorovya, microgreen of unusual colors and shades is in demand: with reddish, dark or light green leaves. The consumer likes color transfusions and different shades, restaurants buy bright greens, and most chefs are not interested in the price.
If we talk about the cultivation of microgreen as a type of business, then certain investments are needed, because in this case the greenhouse is more suitable and a special irrigation and lighting system is required. According to entrepreneurs who are already working in this area, a large area for growing microgreen is not needed, since a racking system is used, and the racks are installed in four to five tiers. Microgreen amaranth has every chance to become not only a fashionable trend, but also part of the menu of each resident. Already today, nutritionists say, the diet of many Ukrainians has become healthier.
Requirements for the room and its characteristics
The cultivation of microgreen in large volumes occurs on a larger area, and in this case, as entrepreneurs note, mold fungi appear, which leads to spoilage of production and the death of the greenery itself.
For the production of high-quality microgreen, it is necessary that the room in which it is grown is well ventilated. It should receive about five volumes of air per hour. At the same time a little bit of lighting is required: according to the users, when the light is too bright, microgreen becomes bitter.
The main technological procedure is ventilation. If it is not sufficient, a favorable soil is created for the development of mold fungi, and this ultimately leads to the deterioration and death of microgreen.
Devices for growing large volumes of microgreen
Today, there are real home farms for microgreen amaranth. Special devices provide a regular flow of moisture along with oxygen in the form of water mist. So the seeds do not get wet, and evenly get the right amount of moisture. Users are advised to use only devices made from human-friendly components like BPA-free plastic as a mini-farm.
In the classic version of the mini-farm, the presence of a direct sprouter is provided, as well as six oblong trays – one large and five smaller. In addition, the farm itself has 2 chambers: one should have trays for the grains, and the other one should pour water (purified or spring). In the second tank and the formation of fog.
If necessary, several simple mini-farms can be easily combined into a complex and get more useful products, without taking up much space. With the active use of the mini-farm it is necessary to clean it every six months. For this it is better to use a special solution. It is prepared at the rate of 5 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide or a pinch of potassium permanganate per 2 liters of water. Pour the prepared mixture into the reservoir and connect the sprinkler to the network, but without activating the timer. When the mixture is consumed, you can pour into the farm plain water (2 l) and repeat the cycle.

Indeed, amaranth microgreen contains the maximum amount of nutrients: vitamins, mineral salts, biologically active components.
