On the Ukrainian agricultural market today, 15 enterprises are known that are engaged in processing amaranth grain. The fact that this type of business is profitable, says the increase in the volume of their products. Thus, only the production of oil from amaranth seeds increases annually by 12%. In proportion to increase the volume of products obtained in the processing of grain – flour, meal. Products are in demand in baking, in the areas of production of additives, cosmetics, animal feed and pets. If we consider that amaranth is an unpretentious culture and at the same time it has a mass of useful properties, then the idea of using its capabilities is quite natural.
AMARANTH PROCESSING IS SELECTED FOR INVESTMENT PROJECTS NOT RANDOMLY
Information on various projects on financial investments is published today at several agro-resources. You can see projects for the production and sale of amaranth cold-pressed oil, instant groats and amaranth grain flour, and amaranth oil production only for the cosmetic industry. Depending on the planned capacity of the enterprise, the investments are specified in the range of 91-290 thousand dollars. At the same time, the payback period, according to the calculations of the authors of the projects, does not exceed 210 days. Interestingly, in almost every case one of the goals is announced to enter the world market, and this is quite promising, since so far Ukraine accounts for less than 1% of amaranth oil, for example.
In all projects, the focus is on oil production, since it is considered the most valuable product. Indeed, amaranth oil contains almost the entire set of nutrients needed by the body, and in quantities that are not observed in any other culture. It contains only 15 types of vitamins, as well as:
• macronutrients (potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus);
• trace elements (iron, manganese, copper, selenium, zinc);
• digestible carbohydrates (starch and dextrins, mono- and disaccharides, glucose, maltose, fructose, sucrose);
• omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids;
• saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids.
In addition, in the composition of amaranth oil, there are 10 essential amino acids and 8 essential ones.
If we talk about quantities, then vitamin B2, for example, in amaranth 11.1%, B5 – 29.1%, B6 – 29.6%, B9 – 20.5%, potassium – 20.3%, calcium – 15 , 9%, magnesium – 62%, phosphorus – 69.6%, iron – 42.3%, manganese – 166.7%, copper – 52.5%, selenium – 34%, zinc – 23.9%.
All these data speak in favor of amaranth and indicate its therapeutic and prophylactic properties, which are stored in oil and other products. Therefore, it is not surprising that large companies take amaranth oil as a raw material for the production of their products, but it should be noted that commodity producers in the world market are only interested in high quality raw materials. It works with amaranth oil in the cosmetics industry, for example, the Czech company Ryor, the Polish CEDERROT, the Avon corporation, the German company Dr. Scheller and several others. It can be noted that amaranth oil is used as a raw material by companies in Europe, Asia, Malaysia, India, Africa, and the USA. This suggests that products based on amaranth are in demand in many different countries.
FROM GENERAL TO PRIVATE OR ONE OF THE EXAMPLES OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT ON THE PROCESSING OF THE AMARANTH
This amaranth processing company from Nikolaev is a little more than five years old, but its products under the Shvedov trademark are known both in Ukraine and abroad. But, as noted on its website, the idea of deep processing of amaranth has been implemented here since 2012, and the first oil was produced by the company in 2016.
It should be noted here that the brothers Andrei and Sergei Shvedovy organized their enterprise, simply becoming interested in amaranth as a healing plant and the ability to extract oil from its grain. Sergey is an engineer by profession and previously was a mechanic for survivability systems of the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, then he was engaged in the development of equipment for mills. Andrei founded the first online casino in Ukraine, but after the ban was passed, he closed it. Engaged in trading in Bulgaria, worked in the IT industry, founded his rock band Prospect Mira and a rock club.
The brothers studied the market, tried to determine the volume of consumption of amaranth oil by operators, collected and compared information on the production capacities of large enterprises in Europe and the USA, looked for an investor, and for the Scientific and Production Company AMARANTH, which was different. Thus, an innovative equipment was developed that allows producing cold-pressed oil of at least 5%, and a fundamentally new approach to processing amaranth seed was used here. As the brothers stated when presenting their project, according to their technology, “cold pressing” is applied, but amaranth seeds are pre-disassembled into anatomical structures.
As the brothers stated when introducing their project, according to their technology, “cold pressing” is applied, but amaranth seeds are pre-disassembled into anatomical components, and this is done on specially designed and patented equipment. As a result, the press does not contain amaranth grain, but that part of it, which is called the embryo, and this makes it possible to obtain oil at a temperature below 35 degrees, while preserving all the natural qualities of amaranth. Today, under the brand name Shvedov, oil is produced (including capsules), flour, organic grains, flakes. The declared annual processing capacity of amaranth is up to 240 tons per year.
It can be added that in 2018 about 1 thousand hectares of amaranth were sown in Ukraine (against 250 hectares in 2017). AMARANT has signed contracts with agricultural producers to buy the next harvest.
ABOUT PRICE RANGE AND PROSPECTS
Today, amaranth oil can be purchased at the price that is most acceptable. However, let’s not forget that a high-quality and healthy product cannot be cheap, because raw materials for it are grown on ecologically clean soil, and the technology excludes the use of any artificial additives.
So, amaranth oil / 200 ml / first cold extraction 100% of the production of Amaranth Ukraine is offered for 650 UAH. Oil from germ seeds of amaranth of the Shvedov trademark can be purchased for 488 UAH (100 ml). Cold-pressed Amaranth Oil TM “Khersonskiy olії” (500 ml) – for 975 UAH.
There is a cheaper version on the Ukrainian market – 100% natural oil of the first cold-pressed trademark TM “Eco-olio”, and for 250 ml of this product you will have to pay only 390 UAH. Some consumers and connoisseurs of oils consider it to be a salad with a minimum amount of nutrients, but as evidenced by reviews, this oil also has healing properties. Taking this oil 1 teaspoon twice a day before meals, you can achieve an excellent effect in the prevention of colds, and the body’s defenses are strengthened so that a person does not get sick, even staying among those infected.
In the world market, the cost of high-quality amaranth oil is different, and from this point of view, product exports may be more interesting. So, in the US, 10 (!) Ml of amaranth oil costs from $ 18. In France, a cold-pressed, non-refined, 100% pure edible amaranth oil obtained by cold pressing without loss of its beneficial properties with a squalene content of 9% costs $ 13.74 per 10 ml.
The situation in the global market may change and not for the worse. So, for the next few years, experts predict the expansion of the market for high-quality amaranth products. The company Zion Market Research, which collects statistical data and marketing research results in various fields, including cold pressing, supercritical extraction of liquids, has published a report that lists forecasts for the period up to 2021. According to the report, the global amaranth market is increasing and by 2021 it will reach $ 813.1 million. The increase in demand for amaranth products is predicted in the areas of cosmetics and personal care, pharmaceuticals, food additives. At this stage, there is a shortage of raw materials.
